This month CoLAB TRIALS welcomed 4 new team members, strengthening its expertise and multidisciplinarity
We are excited to announce that our team has expanded with the addition of four talented professionals. Luís Alves joins us as a Data Scientist, bringing valuable skills in data analysis and interpretation. Cláudia Paiva and Gonçalo Borrecho have come aboard as PhD students, contributing fresh perspectives and academic rigor to our efforts. Natasa Loncarevic now serves as our Science Communication Manager, helping to enhance the visibility of CoLAB TRIALS and effectively communicate our initiatives.
Each of these new team members brings a diverse set of backgrounds and expertise, further enriching CoLAB TRIALS’ multidisciplinary approach. Their contributions will play a key role in driving innovation and advancing our mission to accelerate the development of medical technologies through collaborative research.

CoLAB TRIALS participated in the BIOMEET 2024, the annual meeting of the Biotechnology sector in Portugal, that took place at the Taguspark Congress Center in Oeiras on September 30 and October 1, 2024.
Our colleague, Fábio Lampreia was invited by CoLAB AccelBio to give a workshop on the topic of “Regulatory Considerations in Nonclinical Drug Development”.
The CoLAB TRIALS team is excited to announce the publication of our latest review article in Digital Health: “Digital Health Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular Clinical Trials: A Landscape of the European Space.”
In this review, we explore key therapeutic areas under investigation, the most common types of interventions, and the transformative potential of AI-driven technologies in healthcare. We also provide an in-depth analysis of clinical endpoints and outcomes, comparing AI-driven trials with traditional pharmaceutical trials.
CoLAB TRIALS, together with VoH CoLAB, AccellBio CoLAB, and VectorB2B, had the opportunity to participate in a round table to discuss “How Can CoLABs Support Global Health Challenges” at Ciência 2024 in Porto on July 4th. It was an excellent opportunity to show how these collaborative platforms, bringing together diverse expertise and resources, have the potential to play a significant role in tackling complex health issues. Diogo Araujo from ANI generously chaired this session.
The CoLAB TRIALS team had the opportunity to celebrate International Clinical Trials Day at the annual conference of Hospital da Luz Learning Health. It has been inspiring to be alongside exceptional speakers who shared brilliant clinical research results. Fábio Lampreia highlighted the latest trends in clinical trials, particularly those utilizing AI. Despite the inherent challenges, we believe that through collaboration, we can continue to move towards innovation.

CoLAB TRIALS was delighted to present “The regulatory pathway for novel and innovative healthcare products”, on April 17th, as part of the Microcredencial programme in Innovation and Industrial Property in Health. Microcredential was organized by the Health and Human Development School of the University of Évora and the CHRC – Comprehensive Health Research Centre. It was great to present our knowledge on clinical trials and on the regulatory pathway to such a dynamic group and to pave the way to provide support on the development of innovations in the health sector in Évora.
On November 21, 2023, the NOVA Science & Innovation Day 2023 was held at Reitoria da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Like other UNL CoLABs, CoLAB TRIALS had a presence with a booth, providing an opportunity to showcase our contributions to entrepreneurs within the UNL/NMS community. During this event, we unveiled, for the first time, our Medical Device Classification Tool.
On November 17, 2023, Catarina Madeira participated in the AEFFUL Annual Conference and served as one of the speakers on Panel III, addressing the theme “Research: which directions to take? What directions await us?” This two-day conference provided an opportunity to delve into discussions on the challenges confronting future healthcare professionals, as well as topics such as pharmacological and technological innovation, artificial intelligence, digitization, and health data.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of PMI Portugal. The annual conference occurred on October 12th and 13th, 2023, and CoLAB TRIALS had the opportunity to be one of the sponsors, emphasizing our commitment to professional project management. Our team, including members from our associates Nova Medical School and Hospital da Luz-Learning Health, attended the conference and gleaned insights from experts, staying abreast of the latest trends in project management.
This year, the 4th CHRC summit took place in Évora. We were fortunate to attend the two-day event, seizing the significant opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and strengthen valuable partnerships with all these incredible teams, including those from two of our associates: Nova Medical School and the University of Évora
It was focused on strategies to increase the activity dedicated to clinical research in hospital context. Experts discussed practical problems and strategies to increase the volume and quality of research in a hospital. Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and the European Health Data Space also had their place in the programme, as well as an update about the ongoing research projects at Luz Saúde and the Hospital da Luz network, in the areas of preventive medicine and early diagnosis, precision medicine, outcome research and computational medicine and imaging.
Our CoLAB participated in the panel “The Digital Transformation: the beginning of a new era”. In this meeting the evolution of CoLABs activities was discussed together with its integration on the regional ecossystem dynamics, during the transition to a new base funding cycle, under the scope of Missão Interface and Plano Nacional de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR).
CoLAB TRIALS team is attending the workshop series of the Capacitation Program for technological infrastructures promoted by ANI, through TECH4INNOV project, on the 17 th and 28 th of November and 15 th of December 2022.
CoLAB TRIALS participated in the EDE-X – Spaces for Entrepreneurial Discovery, organized by ANI, in the PACT Alentejo, in Évora on the 7 th of November. This is a cycle of participatory events aiming at involving the entire innovation community in the construction of an operational governance model of the National Strategy for Intelligent Specialization (ENEI 2030).
CHRC is the FCT research unit of CoLAB TRIALS which attended the 3 rd Annual Summit on the 3 rd and 4 th of November 2022 at Nova Medical School. Check out the excellent invited speakers and CHRC researchers awarded with scientific prizes.
CoLAB TRIALS team attended the Welcome Networking Cocktail with EIT Health InnoStars Partners at Nova Medical School on the 2 nd of November 2022. It was an outstanding opportunity to establish sound connections with Innostars ecosystem mainly with Corporate, Investors, and Startups.
